A safari sounds like a whole lot of fun. A safari also sounds like a whole lot of money. And since something has gone horribly wrong if we see poison dart frogs and tigers roaming the streets of Idaho, there was only one logical place to go when I felt like paying a visit to some exotic animals: Zoo Boise.
I’m not much of a morning person. So when I heard how early I’d have to wake up for the sunrise Spirit of Boise hot air balloon launch at Ann Morrison Park earlier this month, I was dubious. The lost sleep turned out to be worthwhile, though: who could argue with fire and spaceships and bright colors? If you didn’t manage to make it out there, here’s a look at what you missed…and maybe next year you’ll be inspired to brave the early wake-up call yourself!
Sunny summer afternoons, beautiful parks, the always-stately Boise Depot, and old college friends: a recipe for a wonderful photo session. Hannah was in my graduating class at Willamette University, and when she told me a couple weeks ago she’d be driving through Boise, we planned a photoshoot downtown. Here are a few of my favorite shots from the afternoon with Hannah and her girlfriend, Anna, all taken along the Boise Greenbelt and at the Depot.
One of my friends recently asked me what I did with all my extra photos–you know, the ones that don’t make the final cut for an album. It’s a fair question: if I take well over 100 photos in an hour and only retouch 40 of those, what happens to all the others? Sadly, the answer is that most of these extras end up getting archived on my hard drive, never to see the light of internet stardom. It’s not that they’re bad photos (well, most of them). Some might be alternate angles and zooms on the same pose. Others might be shots I loved but just weren’t quite as good as the ones that made the grade for retouching. Tragic, but just as you can’t hug every cat, you can’t retouch every photo.
But that’s where the photo blog comes in. Every so often, I get to go through the archives, stumble across some favorite shots that didn’t make the original cut…and have a venue for posting the “new” photos. Kate’s photo session was way back in February, but that doesn’t mean the outtakes were forgotten! Here are a few of the best b-sides, as well as my favorite images from the original album.
